An Incredible Inheritance

An Incredible Inheritance
Devotions with Pastor Jason Lim

When Apple co-founder Steve Jobs died, his widow Laurene Powell Jobs inherited his fortune. The inheritance immediately made her the world’s fourth richest woman. The astounding amount of wealth she received, however, will never come close to what God has prepared for believers. In Romans 8:17 we catch a glimpse of this God-sized inheritance: "...and if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ." Today you are an heir of Jesus Christ if you are a child of God.

In His grace, God has given us His Son Jesus, and as many that have received him has Jesus given the power to be sons of God. So those who turn from sin and trust in Jesus are what the Bible calls "children of God". And along with this title, we receive peace, justification, and reconciliation. But God does not just tell us about our present, He promises something for the future. This brings us back to the promise in Romans 8:17. If you understand the meaning of a joint-account between 2 individuals, you realize both parties have 100 percent rights to the wealth in the account. This makes the amazing promise of being a joint-heir with Christ something our finite minds cannot grapple with. One day in the future, everything Christ has, I will have, and we will receive exactly what Jesus will inherit! If this astounds you, it’s probably because you haven’t checked the title deed of your inheritance. In our land-scare country, owning a property is a heavy financial undertaking, yet every Singaporean desires his or her dream home. But if you recognize what God is going to give you in Jesus Christ, you can rejoice. He is not just going to give you a small piece of land to call home. He gives you the whole heaven and whole earth!

We see another reality of this future time, in Heb. 1:2: “In these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things.” And in Rev. 3:21, “The one who conquers, I will grant him to sit with me on my throne.” Sitting with Jesus on the throne implies you will reign and rule as kings. God is preparing the new heavens and new earth that we may rule together with His Son as future kings!

But perhaps the greatest truth about our inheritance that needs to sink into our souls, is that we are promised the very presence of the Holy God himself. He will make His dwelling with us and we shall be completely satisfied in His presence.
