Choose Life

Choose Life
Devotions with Pastor Jason Lim

Nobody can escape the consequences of their choices. For every choice we make, certain results will be reaped, both good and bad. So if we choose to sin, we can expect certain consequences the Bible speaks of.

“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)

The word “wages” here in Greek is the word “opsonion”, it refers to a daily ration or allowance given to soldiers. To be able to fight and to survive, Roman Empire soldiers received an “opsonion” daily. This is different from the wage that you earn at the end of a project or period of work. This was something given daily.

The Bible teaches that when you choose sin, the daily consequence you reap is death. Every sinful action develops a sinful habit, and a sinful habit results in a sinful lifestyle. The wages of being an unrepentant
sinner is ultimately condemnation in the lake of fire, but sin makes you die a little every day! If you are a Christian who has fully trusted in the Lord, you are graciously spared eternal condemnation in hell, even
when you slip into sin, but it doesn’t mean that you will be spared from the painful guilt or damaging consequences of recurring sin.

When we sin, we lose our intimacy with God and grieve the Holy Spirit. We cannot assume we can hold God’s hand in one hand, and sin’s hand in the other. We have been set free from sin so that we may
worship, follow, and have a relationship with God. The gift of God through His Son Jesus Christ is eternal life, and that life is freely given to all who accept Him as their Saviour.

Today may your choices result in praise, honor, and glory to God, as you actively choose life in Christ, and not death in sin.
