Forever
Devotions with Pastor Jason Lim
Many people have speculated about what eternity means. In today's culture we use the word "forever" flippantly. We might say that "she took forever to get ready" when it might have been only half an hour. As our finite minds try to grasp the concept of a life that never ends, we might even experience the tragic feeling of boredom. However, when the Bible says that God is an everlasting God or that He grants us eternal life, it is not merely speaking of a "very long time." When it comes to divine things, "eternity" refers to things that do not end.
God promises us eternal life in His grace as shown in Romans 5:21: "so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." So what does eternal life mean?
Eternal life is really about being in the inexhaustible glory of God forever. It also extends to the eternal experiencing, knowing, tasting, and admiring of the glory of God. Our faith becomes sight as we finish our race and that gift alone is God-sized. It will never run dry. It will be ecstasy after ecstasy, joy after joy, of experiencing the immeasurable glory of God. It's about us finding that the glory of God will satisfy our needs forever and ever. It's a God-sized treasure that God is giving to us in His amazing grace. Though we actually deserve wrath, God's gift of eternal life will be given to us freely, fully, and forever.
