How To Be Holy
Devotions with Pastor Jason Lim
When people hear the words 'holy' or 'holy man', they tend to squirm. Most of us don’t want to be associated with being holy especially when the stereotypical picture of a holy man is one who is bald, bare-footed, restricted to a strange diet, lives in caves and mountains, talks funny, he walks funny, and is just plain weird. Being holy is just not cool for us.
However, holiness is a glorious teaching in scripture, for God is Holy. Holiness is not about your appearance, attire or diet. Holiness is thinking and being like God. Therefore, nothing is more attractive than holiness. When the angels declare God in the Bible, they say 'Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord of Hosts. The whole earth is full of His glory’. God Himself says "Be ye holy for I am holy." (1 Peter 1:16) If a man is to have deep intimacy with the God of the Heavens, he must be holy for "without holiness, no man shall see God" (Hebrews 12:14). So we must pursue holiness because God is holy, and holiness is needed for us to have communion with Him.
The question now is, 'how can you and I be holy'? First, recognize this: you can't make yourself holy. You have no power to make yourself holy." For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh." (Romans 8:3) I can't make myself holy because the flesh is weak. In and of ourselves, there is no power or ability to meet up to the standards or requirements of the holy law of God.
That's why God sent His Son to defeat sin for us. He came not to destroy the law or the prophets. He came to fulfill the law completely. He then gave His life upon the cross to fully pay for our sins. He who knew no sin is made sin for us, that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him. He now lives in those who believe in Him through His spirit, giving us the power to pursue true holiness from the heart.
