Armed to Suffer Well [1 Peter 4:1-6]

Overview

There is only 1 command in this passage- to arm ourselves with the Jesus way of thinking to suffer well. Why? 1. EXAMPLE OF CHRIST. Whilst it is never easy to suffer, it's easier knowing we are not pioneers, but followers of suffering. 2. EXPECTATION OF CONFLICT. The world around us hates Christ and His church. Persecution is not strange, because we have become strange to the world. 3. EXONERATION OF THE CHRISTIAN. Whilst the world may judge us, God will vindicate us, and raise us to new life, like how He raised Jesus in the Spirit. As Christ suffered before us, let us suffer well: do good, bless others, trust God, and glorify Him through the way of the cross.

Sermon Transcript

Pastor Jason from Gospel Light Christian Church discusses the concept of the "suffering well mindset" based on 1 Peter 4:1-6. He emphasizes the importance of adopting a perspective similar to Christ's, who suffered in the flesh for the unrighteous. This mindset involves not retaliating but blessing those who persecute, trusting in God's ultimate justice. Pastor Jason highlights that Christians should expect conflict due to their faith and that those who suffer well are those who have ceased from sin. He encourages believers to follow Jesus' example and trust in God's vindication, despite facing hostility and persecution.

Arming Yourself with the Suffering Well Mindset

• Pastor Jason introduces the theme of the sermon, emphasizing the need for Christians to arm themselves with a specific way of thinking, not physical weapons.
• He references the imagery of soldiers gearing up for battle, drawing a parallel to the spiritual battle Christians face.
• The central idea of the sermon is the "suffering well mindset," which is crucial for Christians living in a hostile world.
• Pastor Jason explains that this mindset is rooted in the example of Christ, who suffered in the flesh and is the ultimate model for Christians to follow.

The Example of Christ and Suffering in the Flesh

• Pastor Jason elaborates on the phrase "suffer in the flesh," linking it to Christ's suffering for sins and His role as a substitute for the unrighteous.
• He emphasizes that Christ's suffering was fruitful, leading to His glory and the salvation of sinners.
• The suffering well mindset involves not retaliating but continuing to bless and do good, even to those who persecute.
• This mindset is described as the cruciform way of life, following Jesus' example of suffering well.

Expecting Conflict and Persecution

• Pastor Jason discusses the expectation of conflict and persecution for Christians, explaining that the world will oppose them.
• He uses the analogy of crabs in a pail to illustrate how people dislike those who are different and may try to pull them down.
• Christians who cease from sin and live righteously may face maligning and slander from those who do not approve of their new lifestyle.
• The suffering well mindset requires Christians to be prepared for such hostility and to trust in God's ultimate justice.

The Role of God's Judgment and Vindication

• Pastor Jason explains that those who malign Christians will face judgment from God, who will ultimately vindicate the righteous.
• He emphasizes that Christians should not seek revenge but leave it to God, trusting that justice will be served.
• The exoneration of Christians is rooted in their faith and the promise of eternal life, even if they suffer in the flesh.
• Pastor Jason encourages Christians to live a holy life, determined to cease from sin and live for the will of God.

The Story of John and the Gang Renunciation Program

• Pastor Jason shares the story of John, a former gang member who renounced his gang affiliation and turned his life around.
• John's experience highlights the challenges of leaving a criminal lifestyle and the support needed to do so.
• The gang renunciation program in Singapore provides a formal ceremony for individuals to renounce their gang membership.
• This story serves as an analogy for Christians who must expect conflict and persecution when they cease from sin and follow Jesus.

The Importance of Looking Up, Around, and Ahead

• Pastor Jason advises Christians to look up to Jesus as their example, look around to recognize the enemies of Christ, and look ahead to the vindication of the righteous.
• He emphasizes that Christians should not be surprised by persecution but should be prepared for it.
• The ultimate vindication of Christians will come from God, who will judge those who oppose them.
• Christians should continue to do good and bless others, trusting in God's justice and ultimate victory.

The Parable of the Crabs and Human Nature

• Pastor Jason uses the parable of crabs in a pail to illustrate how people dislike those who are different and may try to pull them down.
• He explains that this behavior is not limited to crabs but is also true for humans.
• Christians who cease from sin and live righteously may face anger and hatred from those who do not approve of their new lifestyle.
• The suffering well mindset requires Christians to be prepared for such hostility and to trust in God's ultimate justice.

The Story of Ignaz Semmelweis and Medical Discovery

• Pastor Jason shares the story of Ignaz Semmelweis, a doctor who discovered the importance of hand washing in preventing infections.
• Semmelweis's findings were initially rejected by his colleagues, leading to his depression and eventual death.
• This story serves as an analogy for how the world often gets things wrong, especially regarding Jesus and His church.
• Christians should trust in God's ultimate justice and not be discouraged by the world's negative perception of them.
The Exoneration of Christians and Eternal Life
• Pastor Jason explains that Christians who suffer in the flesh and live righteously will ultimately be vindicated by God.
• He emphasizes that Christians should not be discouraged by the world's negative judgment but should trust in God's ultimate justice.
• The exoneration of Christians is rooted in their faith and the promise of eternal life.
• Christians should continue to do good and bless others, trusting in God's ultimate victory.

The Role of Resin and the Suffering Well Mindset

• Pastor Jason uses the analogy of resin from a tree to illustrate how Christians should respond to wounds and persecution.
• Resin flows out of a tree when it is wounded, providing protection and healing.
• Similarly, Christians should respond to persecution with love and forgiveness, not bitterness and revenge.
• The suffering well mindset requires Christians to show forth God's excellencies in the world, even when they are wounded.
