The Wind Blows As It Wishes

The Wind Blows As It Wishes
Devotions with Pastor Jason Lim

Do you know the words to the song “Summer Wind”?
“The summer wind came blowing from across the sea.
It lingered there to touch your hair and walk with me.”

I can picture a windy night as Jesus explained to Nicodemus the truths of salvation. Maybe as the wind blew through the hair of Jesus and Nicodemus, Jesus declared that the Spirit is just like the wind. It is unpredictable, untameable, it arrives unannounced. It comes and goes as it pleases. “The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” (John 3:8) The Holy Spirit works in human hearts, not in a way that is predictable to us, but in a way that we cannot command or demand. This is because the Holy Spirit is sovereign. He has His will, and He works in ways that are unknown to man.

However, despite the Holy Spirit’s mysterious ways, we know that He does indeed work in us from seeing the effects of His power in our lives. Just like how we can hear and see the rustling of leaves and grass as a result of the wind, a changed life is evidence of the Spirit’s work in human hearts. The mighty working of the Holy Spirit gives rise to a new life, and it produces an authentic life change.

I think that the best description of a born-again child of God is one who is marvellously altered, someone who is like Christ, who wants to know, worship and serve God. I think that the best way to describe a changed life is this: a life marvellously moulded by the Holy Spirit’s power.

Can the Spirit’s workings be seen in your life today? Just like the wind, its effects are unpredictable yet clearly seen, may the Spirit act in our lives to exhibit the life-changing gospel of Christ.
