There is only one way to eternal life. And that is through Jesus Christ, God's Son. He alone is to be our righteousness. There is no other way. That is why Jesus calls us to "enter by the narrow gate. " What does He mean? We need to first leave the way of self-righteousness. We are then to look for this narrow gate in the Bible. Having found this narrow gate, we then need to enter this narrow gate. This means that we are to lay aside the love for sin and for worldly things. And we need to believe that Jesus alone is our salvation. The Christian journey then towards the "celestial city" will be one marked by endurance through trials and tribulations. Though it is the hard way, it is the blessed way, for it leads to life. Be sure you are on the right road towards God! Find out more in this sermon.

We begin a new series called, ‘Two Ways to Live’ today and this is really a series based on the concluding statements of Jesus Christ in the sermon on the Mount found in Matthew 7 of the Bible. Now, let me ask you a simple question, first of all, do you know what is the most printed, translated and read book of the whole world? Wah, smart people alright, the Bible! Okay, let me ask you a second question, do you know what's the second most printed, translated and read, read book of the whole world? You are absolutely right, Willy, it is ‘Pilgrim's Progress’.
This is a book written by John Bunyan who lived hundreds of years ago, he was a believer of Jesus Christ and he's a preacher of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and because of his faith and because of his preaching of the Gospel he was persecuted and thrown into prison for 12 long years and it is within those 12 years that he gave us this Christian classic, Pilgrim's progress.
It's a fictitious story, but it narrates how a man- a pilgrim, his name is Christian would leave his home town called the city of destruction to be on this journey towards the heavenly celestial city and in this progress, this journey, this pilgrimage is what Bunyan would call the ‘way of glory’.
The story begins with Christian, he is pictured as someone who carries a huge, ugly, heavy burden on his back. John Bunyan intends for this to describe and to depict the soul crushing weight of sin in a man's life. Then he pictures Christian reading a book and it is within this book, which is supposed to be a picture of the Bible that he reads about the coming doom of the city, he reads how his city is called the city of destruction and so now Christian begins to be very concerned. Indeed, very distressed and troubled, he begins to break down and cry, he's desperately searching for the way of escape.
But, people all around him didn't believe him, people around him thought he had gone nuts, crazy. They laughed at him, mocked at him, but no one could tell him the way of escape. Until one day a man named Evangelist came into Christian's life. Evangelist found out what he was troubled about and told him that there is a way of escape, indeed for those who live in the city of destruction, and Evangelist, then said, pointing into the distance, “can you see that gate over there?” Christian says, “I can't.” “Then can you see the light over there?” Christian says, “I can.” And so Evangelist said, “follow that light and soon you will find that gate that leads you to the way of escape, that leads you to the place of deliverance.”
So Christian began to run, he ran towards that light and whilst he was running, his wife, his kids shouted out to him, “don't go, don't leave us,” and Christian wouldn't listen, he stuck his fingers into his ears and continued to run.
And now his neighbours came and say, “don't go, don't leave us,” and when he wouldn't listen they went to forcibly hold him back and Christian says, “I've got to go.” “Why do you have to go?” “Haven't you read that in the book, it says that ours is the city of destruction, soon it will sink into fire and brimstone.” The neighbour says, “then how about your life here, how about your comforts here?” And Christian says, “that which I leave behind is nothing compared to that which I seek.” “What do you seek?” “I seek a, an inheritance, glorious, incorruptible, undefiled and which fades not away.”
And so Christian continues to run and as he goes towards that path, John Bunyan describes Christian now meeting with some obstacles, some discouragement because he fell into a slough of despond and then he met with Mr. Worldly Wise and the he met with Mr. Legality. These are pictures of what can stumble someone in the pursuit of eternal life. You can be discouraged in the slough of despond, you can be distracted by the world in Mr. Worldly Wise or you can be waylaid by Mr. Legality, a picture of law or legalism trying to obey the law in order to find eternal life.
So Christian was lost for a while until evangelist came again and pointed him back to the original path he should get on. So Christian now is redirected, he goes on the path and eventually arrives at the light, he arrives at the gate. This gate was where he met Mr. Goodwill Grace, that's where he was then able to enter in, set on a path and eventually arrives at the place of deliverance. This is where the straps of his burden snapped, the burden fell off, rolled away and he had peace and joy.
The rest of Pilgrim's progress part one then describes the long journey, Christian would make through the dangers and snares, through the trials and difficulties and tribulations, before he eventually arrives at the City of Heaven, the celestial city. This is Pilgrim's progress part one. You say what is part two, you go and read yourself then you know, alright. So this is Pilgrim's progress part one, the journey of Christian to the Heavenly City.
I refer to this because John Bunyan made reference to a particular imagery and passage in the Scriptures. He talked about that gate through which Christian must pass and that is exactly what Jesus said in the concluding statements of the sermon on the Mount. Jesus said, “for the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.” But when Jesus mentioned this, this is not the only gate, this is not the only way because He refers to another gate and another way, enter by the narrow gate for the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction and those who enter by it are many.
That's why today we come to this series called, ‘Two Ways to Live’. There are two ways possible for man to seek eternal life. One is called the easy way, where the gate is wide that leads to destruction and those who enter by it are many. The other way is where the gate is narrow, the way is hard, but it leads to life and those who find it are few. So, very simply, these two verses may not be so clear here, so let me just rearrange a little and depict it as such there is an easy way and this easy way is guarded by a broad gate and because it is spacious and broad, many people can go through it and indeed go through it, but the irony is that whilst most people go through it, hoping to find life eternal, they end up finding destruction.
By the way, Jesus didn't say one gate has a sign leading to hell, the other gate has a sign leading to heaven, doesn't! Both look like possibilities or possible routes to the eternal life, but one does not, the other does. So when He talks about the broad gate, He's saying that the way of this path, the entrance of this path is very accommodating, anything, everything goes as it were. It is spacious and I think Jesus is referring to how many and indeed all other kinds of religion can be accommodated in this approach, whereby a man earns his way to God.
I think this is a picture of self-righteousness. I think so because the entire sermon on the Mount, remember we looked at in the last few months is given is, is the major content of the sermon on the Mount is about righteousness – “except your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you cannot enter the kingdom of God.” And the last week He said, for this is the law and the prophets, it's about righteousness. So Jesus in His great sermon there, is saying, “let me tell you what is real righteousness of God so that you may see through the fake, false, superficial self-righteousness of men.” So he's contrasting these two ways, so when he talks about the broad gate, He's talking about that very large accommodating approach people have, I do what I need to do, I earn what I need to earn in order to get to eternal life. It's very accommodating because every other religion is about self-righteousness. Every, every religion tells you, be good and then God will be good to you, be good and then you will not go to hell, be good and you'll end up in a better place – heaven. It's all about self-righteousness but there is a way that seems right unto men, but the end is that of death.
So this is where many people go and we learned straightaway that there is no such thing as safety in numbers. Just because many people believe in these religions, just because many people go to such a place of worship, doesn't make it right, many can be on this way, but it ultimately leads to destruction.
Now the destruction here I think is pictured in the city of destruction where it will soon be sunken into fire and brimstone, where there is eternal torment. It is not annihilation, by the way. Some people say, oh, if I die, it's okay, I just disappear, I just sleep. No, the Bible doesn't speak about annihilation disappearance into thin air, vanish but the Bible speaks about eternal misery and torment in the place called hell, where there is fire and brimstone, where there is suffering forever, where there is eternal darkness, that's what this gate, this way may lead people to.
There is a lie today people believe and that is God will not send anyone to hell because they say God is a God of love, he will not send anyone to hell. But, that's a lie because the Bible is very clear, Jesus is the One who spoke the most about this place called hell. God is a God of holiness and justice and His wrath will be poured out upon sin and upon sinners, so there is a way that people think will get them to eternal life, they thought that by doing good by themselves, they will get to eternal life, but the irony of it all is that they will not.
But there's another way and that is called, ‘the hard way’, this hard way is marked by a narrow gate and very few people go in but the joy is that if you're on this path it leads you to life. Now what this means is that the hard way has a very restrictive access, it's not very generous in that we can say everybody who somehow is sincere can get to eternal life. No, it's very restrictive, very narrow and as a result, very few people will find it and enter it and the joy however, is that if the easy way leads you to misery and pain and torment then this speaks of eternal bliss with God, the great joy and peace that we pray for, exhilaration for all eternity. So these are the two ways, simple? Clear?
Let's look at this verse again, enter by the narrow gate, for the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few. Now let me just say this is a passage about those who are seeking eternal life alright! There are two ways to go about it, the broad one, the narrow one and the self-righteous one or the one that is given by God. Now the key however, is not just to know about these two paths. Jesus says what's important for you is that you will enter by the narrow gate, no point standing outside watching the two gates, knowing the two paths, but just standing outside. He says to you, you've got to enter the narrow gate, so how do you enter the narrow gate?
Let me suggest a few things for you:-
1. Leave the Easy Way
Number one, you've got to leave the easy way because if you are searching for eternal life, seeking eternal life for yourself today, I am very sure you are on the wrong path. To start off with, everyone starts off with trying to earn their way to God with self-righteousness, everyone starts there. Everyone thinks that I got to be good enough, better someone, er, not so bad, do more good works and I will be on my way to God. But no Jesus says, it's not a broad gate, it's a narrow gate. So you got to first leave the easy way of self-righteousness.
Maybe this cartoon helps, we are like this guy in a car, we are thinking that as we drive further and further and further and further ahead, we would arrive at destination but actually you are heading towards destruction. What you need to do is to leave this path, leave self-righteousness, say to yourself, my self-righteous was coming to church, helping the poor, trying to live right, giving money, all these count for nothing in the holy eyes of God. I've got to stop doing these things, earning my way to God because it doesn't work. Got to make a U-turn, got to change the way I think God is to be approached. So number one, I would say, leave the easy way, make a turn but turn to where?
2. Look for the Narrow Gate
Well, number two, you've got to look for the narrow gate. The narrow gate has to be found in Matthew 7, few there be that find it. It's not so obvious, you got to find it and what it means is that you've got to hear of, know of, find that way of salvation through I think Jesus Christ. You've got to look for the narrow gate, the narrow gate that speaks of not self-righteousness but God's righteousness, that righteousness of God in Jesus Christ as described in 2nd Corinthians 5- for our sake he made Him [that is Jesus], to be sin for us, who knew no sin, so that in Christ, in Him we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
In other words, the way to come to God is not that you produce your own righteousness, all your righteousness are like filthy rags, the Bible says, doesn't work. So the way to come to God is not earn your righteousness but to receive an alien righteousness. A righteousness that is not from you but given to you and a righteousness of Jesus Christ. He lived that perfect life and He gave Himself on the cross so that His righteousness might become yours and your sinfulness is taken on by Him, that's the narrow gate. So, Paul recognizes that and says, “and be found in Him not having a righteousness of my own.”
He was a very strict follower of the Old Testament laws, he would memorize the Bible, he would pray, he would give money, he observe the dietary rules, he's very strict, he's a Pharisee, but he says, “I now realize I'm on the wrong track. I'm on the wrong road, I cannot come to God with a righteousness on my own because it doesn't work with God, that is fake, superficial, unacceptable righteousness before the Holy God.” He says, “I count them as dung, as rubbish before God. So I'm not going to come to God, having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, that is my superficial obedience to the law but I look for that alien righteousness from God through faith.”
You see that! Leave self-righteousness look for Christ's righteousness, learn of God's righteousness given to man through Jesus Christ. So to come to eternal life, you got to be in a sense like this picture, you can see footsteps marching towards destruction and if you don't turn, if you don't leave, you don't look for that narrow path, you would hit right into eternal misery and torment but those would turn will find that gate that leads to everlasting life.
3. Enter that Gate
So, number three, as I said, no point if you're just standing outside the gate, but you've got to then number three, enter that gate. You can't admire it, study it, you got to go in, and to enter the gate, what does it really mean?
Well, I think a few things, it's narrow, so it does mean that not everything can go through that gate. So this picture is quite cute, I felt the narrow gate and that guy can't bring his car across, “that's unfortunate,” he says, but the essence, is there.
One of the best pictures I can find to illustrate this, is this one, I don't have a better resolution I'm afraid, but I'll try to explain as far as I can, it looks like this. Take a look that's the beauty of art, you learn a few things as you as you look at it, you think about it, consider it. The artist here portrays a man standing before a narrow gate, alright and he wants to communicate a few things to you. What does he want to communicate? By the way, you can see the title, ‘The STRAIT GATE’, S T R A I T at the top, strait doesn't mean not crooked, it means narrow. It’s another word for narrow, so it’s the narrow gate. It’s a strait gate, It’s not STRAIGHT, no GH there, strait as in narrow.
So what do you learned from this picture? Yah, yah it’s very obvious, you can’t bring everything across. You've got to leave some things behind. So what are the things you have to leave behind? What does the author, what does the artist say? You got to leave, this one test your eyesight, I know, you can't see very clearly, but you got to leave pride[good] what else, sensuality[good], deceit[good], worldly ambitions[good], self-love[very good], your eyes are very good, one more. Wah, your eyes, takgong [means excellent in Hokkien dialect] very good, at a very extreme right is covetousness. Now no, no, no, no, let me be clear, I don't think the artist is saying that you got to get rid of all these sins before you can come to God, you can never get rid of these sins before you come to God, but I think what he's picturing is that you must be willing to leave the love of these things, you must be willing to leave behind your old ambitions and pursuits, that you must recognize that your old life is heading towards destruction, alienation from God. It is offensive towards the Holy God, you must be willing to leave these things behind, willing to leave the love of these things behind so that you may pursue Him.
So entering the narrow gate is the process by which you need to lay aside a love for these things, you got to repent of your old life, you got to recognize that following God is not carrying on life as per usual but it demands a radical turnaround that was previously I was pursuing sin and my selfish ambitions pursuing God is a 180 turn and I got to leave these things, they can't go through the narrow gate but the gate secondly is shaped in that of a cross I think the author or the artist is saying that the only way to God is through Jesus Christ, God's Son. After all, didn't Jesus say, “I am the way, the truth and the life, no man comes to the Father but by me.” Very narrow!
In the whole history of humanity, only one could save you, Jesus Christ. Christianity is a very exclusive faith, we cannot deny that, it is very narrow, it is not all roads lead to God, only one road leads to God - Jesus Christ. For there is no name given under heaven, whereby man may be saved, except Jesus Christ.
So if you want to come into the kingdom of God, you've got to repent and you got to believe, it’s very simple. So how can you be on the right path?
Number one, recognize that you're on the wrong path, self-righteousness is the easy way that broad gate, that many people go through, that all religions convert into, there are many religions, but they all converge into one, the broad way, the broad gate, self-righteousness and it leads you ironically to destruction but there's only one other way where you have to find, where you have to learn and I think folks, we are privileged to hear God's Word, we are! You may not think so now but I think in eternity to come, we would be absolutely thankful, we had opportunity to hear about the righteousness of God provided in Jesus Christ. Learn of it today but more than that repent of your sin and believe in God's Son, depend on Him, enter through that gate that you may really have eternal life.
So Jesus says, enter by the narrow gate, leave self-righteousness, learn of the righteousness of Christ, repent and believe in Him alone. And when you are in this gate, you will be led to a certain way, the way is hard, the way is hard.
In some translations, they translated as narrow, the way is narrow. Actually in the Greek, this word occurs 11 times in the New Testament, one time here and the other 10 times, alright, let me say this, the other 10 times is always translated as something hard or difficult. So I think it is true that if you enter this gate, then the journey towards the celestial city will not be an easy one, it will be a hard one, it will be fraught with trials and tribulations, like how Bunyan would describe Christian's journey. And the Bible does talk about this, that through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God. He says, strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith and saying that through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God.
The kingdom of God is for those who would press on, keep on believing because it's not easy, not easy for several reasons.
Maybe, number one if you're follower of Jesus, you might be persecuted for your faith. If you lived in John Bunyan's day, you might be thrown into prison and maybe you'll write another Pilgrim's Progress yourself, but they who live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.
Maybe this difficulty is that we have to wage war against sin, ever so often that we can't indulge in the lust of the flesh but we are called to mortify sin, kill sin in our Christian life, live a life of righteousness and not sinfulness.
Maybe this difficulty may refer to the fact that we have to deny ourselves and take up the cross but the Christian life is not an easy one.
If anyone tells you the Christian life is effortless, is easy, is a bed of roses, it is not the real life. Jesus said the way to eternal life is hard and those who endures to the end will be saved. Like Pilgrim, like Christian, he persists even through the many difficulties he faces in his journey, he endures to the end and that's what the Bible says.
Hebrews also tells us, for we have come to share in Christ, how do you know you are really of Christ? How do you know you are really a partaker of His grace? For we have come to share in Christ if indeed we hold our original confidence firm. A true follower of Jesus doesn't quit on him, you might be discouraged, you might be distracted for a while but you will come back, you'll hold firm, your original confidence to the end and when you enter the gate and remain steadfast in this journey, we will eventually arrive at the Celestial City.
There's a great song we have never sung before in this church, I actually just learned of it this week, as I was preparing the sermon, it's a song written by Isaac Watts. I was told Isaac's father was imprisoned for his faith in Jesus Christ. I was told Isaac wrote some 700 over hymns I think, this is one of them it's called, ‘Broad is the Road’ and I think it's absolutely perfect for what we have been looking at.
I've cut off one or two lines, so that it's more succinct and easier for us, but in general this is what it reads:-
Broad is the road that leads to death
And thousands [millions, billions] walk together there,
But wisdom shows a narrower path
With here and there a traveler.
Deny thyself and take thy cross,
Is the Redeemer's great command,
The fearful soul that tires and faints
And walks the ways of God no more,
Is but esteemed almost a saint
And makes his own destruction sure.
Lord, let not all my hopes be vain,
Create my heart entirely new,
Which hypocrites could never attain
Which false apostates never knew.
Broad is the Road.
Jesus Christ doesn't sugar sugarcoat his truths, there's no need to. But as a result of that, this is the reality, people tell you comforting lies and flocks will go there, but when it comes to truths that may be very unpleasant - like the way of the cross is hard, very few would go there.
I ask you today, where do you go? What road are you taking? This week I was preparing this message and I came across this news or Christian news report about a certain pastor in Harlem, New York. He, he leads a church that is 10,000 strong, that's a lot of people right, how many? 10,000!
So his name is Michael Walrond, one of the most influential pastors in New York City but this is what was shocking. In his message, he said this is literally what he said, “there was a time when you would see people in the pulpit say, well, if you don't believe in Jesus, you are going to hell, that's insanity in many ways because that is not what Jesus even believes. And so the key is you believe in God and whatever your path is to God, I celebrate that, personally I celebrate that.”
Now, what he said was shocking. But what happened after what he said it was also shocking, there was applause from the audience. Now if I said something like that, what would you do? Crucify him, you really should do something strong about it, but they didn't and instead they applauded, that was shocking but then I realized, it's not so shocking if I read on. The article goes on to tell me that Warren serves as a trustee and adjunct faculty member of a certain seminary - the Chicago Theological Seminary, sounds great, sounds wonderful. But one of the deans, their academic dean at Chicago Theological Seminary, said, “Reverend, Reverend Walrond's openness to the truth and wisdom found in multiple religious traditions and his celebration of multiple paths to God is something our institution supports. Institutionally, we do celebrate multiple paths to God and to God's wisdom and truth and that's what I understand also to be Rev. Walrond's position, religious diversity is a hallmark of our school and we are very proud of it. We think that's the future for theological education and we are very proud to be associated With Rev. Walrond.”
If anyone of you is thinking about seminary training, please don't ever get even near to this. I mean, if you can't understand what Jesus is saying in Matthew 7, you have no right to say you are teaching the Bible. I am the way, the truth and the life, no man comes to the Father but by me. This is so clear! If multiple religions multiple paths can go to God why did God send His Son to die? Have they not heard, have they not read, there's only one way!
You can call me narrow minded, you can call me bigoted but there's only one way, Jesus is the only way and therefore, Jesus says, “you got to enter by the narrow gate.”
What does that mean? You got to leave the way of self-righteousness. Doesn't matter what your religion is, I guarantee you it's all about self-righteousness. Only the Gospel is against self-righteousness, self-righteousness is against the Gospel, the Gospel is against self-righteousness, the broad path converges every religion into this - I earn my way to God. You've got to leave that. Many people go there I know but you got to leave that, because at the end of the day, you will only end up in destruction.
So let me say you got to learn secondly of this righteousness of Jesus this alien righteousness you don't have but which is freely given to you if you if you would come to Him. So learn of the righteousness of Jesus.
And number three, you've got to repent and believe in Jesus Christ alone, alone, no one else, nothing else. And for those of you who say I have already repented and believed. I say to you, keep believing till the end because the Christian life is not easy. But if you're on this way, it leads you to life and that's the joy.
My friends, the question today is not where do you want to be? It's a, it's a ridiculous question, everybody wants to be in a better place, who says I want to go to fire and be burned and barbecued? No one wants that! That's not a very good question. I think the better question is what road are you taking to get yourself there because not all roads lead to Rome, not all roads lead to eternal life?
Supposed today you are in Toa Payoh and you want to go to Jurong and you say I'm very sincere about going to Jurong but I want to take the eastbound train, would you ever get to Jurong? You can be very sincere, but you never ever, ever, ever get to Jurong.
So you say, I want to go to God, I want to have eternal life, but you take this road of self-righteousness, would you ever get to God? Would you ever get to eternal life? No! You may be sincere but you're sincerely wrong. The road to hell is paved with good intentions, sincerity maybe one but it's not going to get you there.
So Jesus says be very careful about the road you are taking, this takes effort folks, it's not easy to enter the kingdom of God, you've got to, you've got really want it. I know that because Jesus said the law and the prophets were until John. Now, what does it mean? It means that the entire Old Testament prepares for the coming Messiah. Get that!
The entire Old Testament prepares the readers for the coming Savior and John was the one who baptized the Messiah, John was the one who baptized Jesus in the river Jordan and when God said “this is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased.” So the preparation and actual announcement is pointing to Jesus Christ. Now Jesus is here, now the Messiah that has been promised is here, since then this good news of the Kingdom of God is here, everybody gets to hear this good news of the Messiah is preached and everyone hearing this good news forces his way into the kingdom, they recognize not all is not about my works, it's not about my religion, it's about Jesus, it's about the Messiah and they come in great earnest and desire forsaking repenting of their old ways and believing in Jesus. Takes great effort, but, not everybody is willing to do that, not everybody is willing to let go of those baskets of life.
For example, the rich young ruler, he loved his riches too much, he won't follow Jesus but there are those who will and I hope you're one of those who will. So someone asked Jesus, “Lord, will those who are saved be few,” you know what Jesus said, Jesus said, in essence, “don't ask whether it is few, ask whether it is you,” because He went on to say, strive to enter through the narrow door, for many I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able, they are not willing to let go of their lifestyle, they are not willing to let go of their sin, they won't repent, they won't believe in Jesus alone.
Strife, humble yourself, ask God to make you poor in spirit as what the sermon on the Mount would begin, mourn for your sin, hunger and thirst after righteousness, come and seek God in this alien righteousness.
So let me come back to John Bunyan. I think when Bunyan wrote this story he's not writing it for himself, he had 12 years in prison, he wants to bless the world. Thank God for him, this classic has lived on even up to today. I think when he wrote Pilgrim's progress, he's writing about you, he's writing about me. He's writing about how you and I can be on this way of glory, a journey from the city of destruction to the celestial city, he's writing to tell you that you are a man burdened by sin, don't you feel the soul crushing weight of sin in your life that you're alienated from God and you are lost and sinful and filthy and smelly?
Don't you see that in God's Word, it warns you of the wrath that is to come? Don't you today cry out, Lord give me the way of escape and today, let me be evangelist, let me tell you that there is light, let me tell you that there is a gate that if you enter in, it leads you to the place of deliverance.
Yes, the world will tell you don't go, family and friends will tell you don't go, Legality will tell you not Jesus, trust yourself. Maybe you'll slip into the pond of despond that, that slough of despond, be discouraged but let me today also say please turn your eyes back to that gate and if you do, you will soon arrive at that gate and now is a choice, would you let go, repent of the things of the world and trust in Jesus Christ alone? Because if you do, you'll come to the place of deliverance where the burden of sin is rolled away. It was there by faith I received my sight and all your burdens can roll away and if you today are someone who can say, I have done that, I believe, I still believe, I say please keep believing, don't give up on your faith till the end and one day we will all meet in the Celestial City. I hope I'll see you there, I really do.
Let's bow for a word of prayer together. Life is like a journey, it’s ,like a pilgrimage, where are you in your pilgrimage? Where are you in your life? Perhaps some of us are still like the neighbors of Christian in the city of destruction, we are not seeking life, you are not seeking life because to you, this city is great, to you, life is good. Why do you bother about the Christian message but don't you know in the book it is written that this city will be soon destroyed!
Don't you know that there will come a day where God's wrath will be poured out upon sinners! Don't you know that in the Bible it speaks of eternal misery and torment the city of destruction would soon sink into fire and brimstone! So here is the rallying call, get out! Don't sit there!
Perhaps you have begun to search for the way of eternal life, that's why you're here, I'm glad you're here but maybe even when you're here, you're still listening to Mr. Legality, saying to you come to church, be a good person, read the Bible, pray, give money, help the poor and if you do enough of these things, you will find eternal life. My friends, that’s the broad gate, that's the easy way, that's the way that leads to destruction, even though many people try that. You’ve got to leave that way. You’ve got to stop listening to Mr. Legality. There is one way, which today, I want to point you to, the way of Jesus Christ, the way of righteousness imputed to men given to man, counted to man. If you will walk through that gate of Christ, if you would repent of your sin and your love for the things of this world, repent of your wrong philosophies of this world, of seeking God and trust in Jesus alone.
Jesus is the lamb of God that was slained to save you from your sin, He who knew no sin was made sin for us, punished as sin bearer for us that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him. I urge you this morning there is no decision, no choice more important than this, will you enter the narrow gate? And then if you do, I hope you keep believing. Through the trials and tribulations, ups and downs that finally we all will land on that heavenly shore and be welcomed into the Celestial City of eternal bliss with God. May your journey on earth lead you to the right path, it’s a choice you can make today.
Father, thank You for Your Word, amazing two verses but so clear, so rich. May Your Holy Spirit bring this alive in all our hearts and may this day be the day of salvation for many in this room. We thank You for Your grace, thank you that you sent Your son to rescue us from the city of destruction that we may have this inheritance - glorious, incorruptible, undefiled and which fades not away. To God be the glory and may this motivate us to love you and serve you with our lives, we ask this in Jesus Name, amen.
