True Worship [Psalm 147:1, John 4:24]

Overview

Is worship singing, gathering, serving, or daily living? What is true worship? 1. WHAT IS WORSHIP? “Worship” conveys worth. The biblical words proskuneo (bowing in reverence) and latreia (service) show that true worship treasures God above all, expressed through praise, obedience, and service. 2. WHY WORSHIP? We were made for worship (Psalm 147:1). Sin redirects our devotion towards idols such as money, sex, and power. Only true worship of God transforms us. 3. HOW DO WE WORSHIP? In spirit, from hearts transformed by the Holy Spirit; in truth, according to Scripture (John 4:24); and together as His people. 4. CORPORATE WORSHIP. When the church gathers, we come not merely for advice, but to meet God, who dwells among His people.

Sermon Transcript

The sermon by Elder Jeffrey explains what true worship is, why it matters, and how Christians should worship.

Meaning Worship

• Worship means ascribing ultimate worth to God through a heart that treasures Him, outward praise, and a life of obedience and service.
• Vain worship honors God with words while the heart places something else above Him.

Reasons Worship

• People are made to worship; when they give ultimate value to money, appearance, work, power, or family, those things can distort their lives.
• Worshiping God reorders what people value and frees them from defining their worth through worldly measures.

Practicing Worship

• Worship should be in the Spirit, grounded in the whole counsel of Scripture, and practiced in community.
• Corporate worship is the gathered church meeting with God, not merely attending for songs, a sermon, or fellowship.

What Worship Is

• Worship is ascribing ultimate worth and value to God.
• True worship combines a heart posture that treasures God with praise, obedience, and service.
• Vain worship occurs when the heart is far from God or something else takes His place.

Why Worship Matters

• People are created to worship, but misplaced worship can distort life and relationships.
• Worshiping God reshapes what people value and frees them from seeking worth in worldly measures.

How to Worship

• In the Spirit: through the Holy Spirit and from the heart.
• In truth: according to God's self-revelation in Scripture.
• In community: gathered as the church, God's dwelling place by the Spirit.

Christ Is Worthy

• Jesus gave up His riches and became poor for humanity, so believers might receive life in Him.
• The sermon concludes that Christ alone is worthy of worship.
